Song of the Day – ‘Poison and Wine’, The Civil Wars

Joy Williams and John Paul White aka The Civil Wars
I don't think I took one single breath upon hearing this song, Poison and Wine by The Civil Wars for the first time. Actually, I think I'm breathless every time I hear it...
You only know what I want you to
I know everything you don't want me to
Oh your mouth is poison, your mouth is wine
You think your dreams are the same as mine
Oh I don't love you but I always will
Oh I don't love you but I always will
Oh I don't love you but I always will
I always will
I wish you'd hold me when I turn my back
The less I give the more I get back
Oh your hands can heal, your hands can bruise
I don't have a choice, but I still choose you
Oh I don't love you but I always will
I always will
For me, it's not a literal "sad love song" about one's partner. That's the beauty of personal interpretation, I suppose. But it doesn't make this heartbreaking song any less painful for me to hear. Harsh words, loving words, lies, anger, distance--these are all part of the deepest of friendships and familial relationships.
My heart hurts and I can't breathe.
I don't love you, but I always will...
