“The Black Swan” Trailer – Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis KISS (Video and Photos)
Now that I've got your attention...This film looks fantastic. Here's a quick synopsis via ONTD:
"A New York City ballet company is producing Swan Lake, and director Thomas Leroy (Vincent Cassel) decides to replace prima ballerina Beth MacIntyre (Winona Ryder) with ballerina Nina (Natalie Portman). Nina lives with Erica (Barbara Hershey), her overbearing mother and a former ballerina.
Nina finds competition in new dancer Lily (Mila Kunis). Swan Lake requires a ballerina who can play the innocent White Swan, which fits Nina, and the sensual Black Swan, which fits Lily. The dancers' rivalry changes into a bizarre friendship, and Nina begins exploring a dark side of herself."
What. The. HELL was going on at the very end of this trailer?? I didn't realize there was a horror element to Darren Aronofsky's highly anticipated film. It actually seems cool. I'm troubled though, by prospect the actual dancing -- whether it's implied by professional dancers to be the lead actresses, or if Portman and Kunis will attempt the near-impossible feat of convincing the audience that they are indeed ballerinas. Swan Lake is my favorite ballet. I've been fortunate enough to seen the Bolshoi Ballet perform this masterpiece and was nearly brought to tears. (Yeah, yeah...I know. Name dropper!)
Aside from this one possible distraction, I'm still looking very forward to seeing what Aronofsky brings to the table with The Black Swan.

If Aronofsky could make Mickey Rourke seem like a wrestler, he could probably seamlessly make Portman and Kunis seem like ballerinas, one way or another. I will say, the trailer seemed like the most bizarre remake of “Single White Female” ever.

Stuart…I’m being nit-picky. Things like how the quick shot of Mila supposedly being so “passionate” in her dancing–her hands are NOT “ballerina hands”. The still-photo of Natalie is not even close to a true ballerina pose. She actually manages to look “squat”; not arched enough and her legs look sloppy. (I realize she “took ballet” for many years, but she’s been acting since she was what, 12?)
Now I’m getting worried that I will indeed be fretting over the inaccuracies of the dancing itself. See? I can be nutty about authenticity in film, too!

YES. I saw that and thought, it’s over before it began. Did they not hire a consultant for this? I’m pretty sure she could have at least had believable hands! Those things will hurt my soul, which is too bad, since Aronofsky is a major talent.

Oh, THANK YOU for saying that about “hurting your soul”. That’s EXACTLY how it feels when you witness “bad hands” in ballet (or any dancing, for that matter). The photo of Natalie Portman in her Black Swan costume even irritates me–she’s not arched enough and just seems amateurish, don’t you think? SOMEONE could’ve at least taught her how to stand properly.
Ugh.
Thanks so much for commenting and WELCOME!

Natalie Portman really needs to stop being so bisexual. It is going to cause me… problems.

Ever since I saw the trailer I’ve pretty much been obsessed with seeing this movie! I geeked out a bit and read “tons-o-article” about Portman’s role, this movie, and everything in-between. I was astonished to find out that natalie Portman started training a year in advance for this role, along with her already having ballet training as a little tyke. So All in all, Im way too excited! I cant wait to see this edgier side of Miss Portman.
P.S. Bisexuality is so in right now…
