True Blood Recap – ‘You Smell Like Dinner’

Since HBO knew we would all be on vacay, they let us see the second episode of True Blood of the season a little early. It was much better than the first but I'm still not sure about this season just yet.

While things are just getting started for Eric and Sookie, we get a look back at how Bill became King and learn about his punk past. Sookie goes to Bill to ask if she can get her house back from Eric, he promises to do whatever he can. He sends Eric to deal with the coven of witches at the MoonGoddess Emporium, they happen to be necromancers.

Okay now, later Jessica tells Sookie that Bill was broken hearted over her leaving, but seeing as how he was plowing Katerina, I don't think he's that heart broken anymore. Sookie goes to wait for Eric at Fangtasia where there are a number of Steve Newlin (remember him?) protesting? Hopefully this means an appearance from him and his wife this season. While escorting out Jessica and Hoyt, who fights with some of the protesters, Pam gives us the best line of the episode, "Technology's taken all the fun out of being a vampire."
We get two flashbacks for Bill, the first showing how he became King, he simply killed Queen Sophie-Anne at the behest of Nan Flanagan. Later we see how the two met, Nan tracked Bill to London in the 80s where she noticed that he doesn't kill who he feeds off of and uses him to help find try to mainstream the vampires. Vampires adapt to whatever environment they're in--Eric was a Nazi for a while, but I can't really believe Bill was that punk.
Back in the present, Sam gets closer to Luna, one of his shifter friends. Still not feeling anything about Sam's storyline and it seems we'll be seeing more of Luna, who is incredibly boring except for that whole shifting-into-my-mother-who-died-giving-birth-to-me thing. Sam also agrees to work things out with Tommy, who has a butt just as cute as is. I guess I won't mind more shifting stuff if it means more naked guys.

Arlene is still dealing with her devil baby who makes her eye bleed. Baby Mikey is adorable but that kid will grow up and kill everyone in Bon Temps one day.

Jessica and Hoyt are still dealing with their inter-supernatural relationship. After he refuses her blood and aspirin to help his wounds heal, Jessica leaves for Fangtasia and meets a fangbanger. While feeding on him in the bathroom she runs into Sookie, who she tells to stop acting like her step-mother. Jason is still tied up in Hot Shot.
Crystal Meth is back (ugh) and she wants a baby. Fenton has been shooting blanks and they need to continue to the panther bloodline. The only way that can happen is if they turn him into one, cue panther mauling! It'll be awhile before anyone notices he's gone because Andy is hopped up on V again.

Tara/Toni is back in Bon Temps, and barely being back a full day she's already back in harm's way. She goes to the MoonGoddess Emporium with Lafayette and Jesus where Eric shows up to demand Marnie give up her shop and the group stop meeting. Even after Lafayette warns her, Manie refuses and Eric kills her. After Tara tries to stake him, he grabs her by the neck and just before he can bite the group joins hands and re-animates Marnie. She puts a spell on Eric and he leaves.
At the end we Sookie driving along in her beat up car, calling out to Eric who doesn't recognize her, but knows food when he sees it. "Why do you smell so good?" So, Marnie put an amnesia spell on him, and it was all a set up by Bill. I'm actually pretty excited to see where this goes.
